Redevelopment Plans Withdrawn
As of April 25, 2025, Islington Council has officially withdrawn its plans to redevelop the Finsbury Leisure Centre site. This decision was made in response to significant economic uncertainties and after considering feedback from local residents. The council now plans to invest in modernising the existing leisure centre, retain and improve the sports pitches, consider a new neighbourhood health hub, and seek to build more genuinely affordable housing elsewhere in the borough.
Islington YIMBY: Advocating for Sustainable Development
At Islington YIMBY, we understand the complexities involved in urban development projects. While the withdrawal of the Finsbury Leisure Centre redevelopment plans reflects the council’s responsiveness to community concerns and economic realities, we remain committed to advocating for sustainable and inclusive development across the borough.
Looking Ahead
We encourage the council to continue exploring opportunities to address the pressing need for affordable housing in Islington. By identifying alternative sites and engaging with local communities, we can work towards solutions that balance development with the preservation of valued community spaces.
Join the Conversation
We invite residents, stakeholders, and fellow advocates to engage in constructive dialogue about the future of housing and community development in Islington. Together, we can contribute to shaping a borough that meets the needs of all its residents.
